Is the Jeep Renegade 4xe Coming to Canada?

Is the Jeep Renegade 4xe Coming to Canada?

Two of Jeep’s signature SUVs are going hybrid. It’s in Europe only right now but if the premise works there, we can expect to see it here in Canada shortly after.

The 2022 Jeep Renegade and the Jeep Compass aren’t as big over there as they are here. That’s partly down to culture and partly down to gas prices. These hybrid versions hope to offset that.

Jeep already offers Wrangler 4xe models in Europe and these new 2022 Jeep Renegade Hybrid and Compass models, called e-Hybrid will join them.

Renegade and Compass e-Hybrid

The two smaller SUVs are ideal for the roads of the Old Continent and should resonate well with local buyers. Add the green credentials and frugality of the new hybrid drivetrain and you have a potential winner on your hands.

That drivetrain uses a 1.5-litre four cylinder engine that delivers around 130 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque along with a 5 kW electric motor.

That motor will add another 20 hp and 40 lb-ft to the engine and reduce fuel consumption by up to 15%. There is no word on electric only range as yet though.

With the order boo apparently opening soon with deliveries for March, there isn’t long for Jeep to finalize the design and give us more details.

2022 Jeep Renegade

The 2022 Jeep Renegade hybrid is a likeable small SUV that delivers chunky looks with a soft ruggedness that shouldn’t really work, but really does.

This is the smallest Jeep in the range but that’s a good thing, especially if you live in an urban environment. It’s easy to drive and to park and delivers the practicality we look for in a family car.

2022 Jeep Renegade Hybrid design

It’s a nice design with lots of rounded edges, the signature Jeep grille, rounded lights and an upright stance.

Panels are simple with a nice flow down the car. The profile includes plastic trim at the lower part of the car, which should protect bodywork if you decide to go off road.

It’s not as large as some Jeeps, which makes it better for city life while still being able to carry the family.

Ground clearance is decent and the hatch at the back makes loading kids and cargo a breeze.

Inside, the cabin is nicer than you might think. There are a lot of wipe clean surfaces but they aren’t the cheap plastics you might fear.

Finishing is of a high standard and the front seats are very comfortable indeed. They provide the support you need for daily driving with enough bolster should you venture onto the rough stuff every now and then.

Under the hood

Under the hood of the 2022 Jeep Renegade is a modest 1.3-litre turbocharged four cylinder. It’s a decent unit that provides 177 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque.

That’s plenty enough for this size of vehicle and the kind of life it is likely to lead. It uses a 9 speed automatic transmission to drive all wheels (except the Sport).

Overall, we think the 2022 Jeep Renegade is an excellent vehicle. It should be able to add even more fans once the e-Hybrid becomes available and we expect to see a lot more of them on Europe’s roads later this year.
